This is my new pal, Mr Dog. We recently became acquainted because he's living on the porch of an un-rented home in my neighborhood and he sometimes roams so I've had a few close encounters with him. Don't get me wrong, he hasn't done anything wrong, it's just that a few years ago this happened to Ranger when a stray pit bull got a hold of him.
The image is from a scanned document so, not that clear.
Ever since then I've had a primal fear of roaming dogs of any sort but I want to overcome that because I care about animals - we rescued Ranger from starving to death in a culvert in Alabama - and I want to do more than write checks to rescue groups who do everything they can to prevent stray animals from being put down. So for the last two days I've been leaving food and water for Mr Dog but have been unable to approach him directly, just from my car which is how I got this picture. He looks well cared for and has a collar but I can't tell if he has tags and I think that the two of us meeting in fear might create a long-lasting negative experience for both of us so I've been posting on Craigslist, Facebook, Pet Come Home, and Pensacola Hotel For Dogs And Cats. I've only had one response so far and it was for a lost dachshund. I am feeling less afraid the more I interact with him but based on my reaction when Ranger and I encountered him by accident this morning, I still have a long way to go. My biggest fear by far, though, is that Animal Control will get to him before his owner does. We're printing flyers today and putting them up around the neighborhood. And praying. Let me know if you think you know who he might belong to, I want nothing more than to see him get home to his owner.

That face breaks my heart. Oh, I so hope someone claims him. I guess you can't tell whether or not he's chipped, but if he isn't neutered, then it's doubtful.
Good luck. I hope you find his family.
What a face, indeed! Very sad. Bless you for caring for Mr Dog. If the home had been rented recently, it's possible the last tenants moved off and left him. With the economy and hard times, that is happening more and more, unfortunately. I wondered if any rescue group in your area would take him in. In the meantime, you and he will be in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for looking after that gorgeous boy!
Mr Dog as a name wins my approval. Something you don't want to hear but I wonder when the last tenants moved, if they left him behind. Evicted, financially strapped etc... I hope not.
You have a big heart P
(beautiful photo too)
oops! now I read the comments
I'm about 99% certain he wasn't left behind because the home has been vacant for a good while. I did go out looking for flyers today and talked to someone living a nearby development. They followed me back to the rental house and said that they'll talk to one of their neighbor's about it. The game is afoot!
I don't know him. But he is so adorable. Good luck. Keep us posted.
When did you restart this blog again, Paula? You can't go wrong with a K9 pic!
Please keep us informed. Thank you for your efforts on his behalf.
Mr Dog is still there and I haven't heard from anyone - yet. I need to find a shelter for him.
Oh dear. As I've said before, there's a special hell for people who desert their dogs.
maybe some boxer rescue. He looks like a boxer to me
I think there should be a special hell for people who don't neuter their animals and let them run loose outside 24 hrs a day - which is what we've found out about this dog. That's right, he has an owner in the neighborhood but they let him fend for himself. Grrrrrr!
Great work, Paula. I wonder who's dumber (a gentle word for it), parents of children or parents of dogs . . . Most are fine, of course, but those that aren't need more correction than I can offer.
In my religion, there are several special hells.
Glad you got to the bottom of this.
I'm late and you've already solved the mystery. Shall we call Mr. Dog's owner Mr. Jackass? His hell will be that much hotter for causing you unneeded stress.
I had my wrist torn up by a dog I was trying to catch. He took off and I spent the morning in the emergency room. So I definitely recommend extreme caution when trying to catch a stray dog.
Forgot to mention, I LOVE Keating blissed out in his hammock!
