The birds may not mind skating on thin ice but I do.
Last night I loaded up their feeders and hung out the suet but today I haven't had much luck photographing them drinking or eating...

Isn't this weather stupid? Good grief, I've never seen it this cold in Ocala! Ugh!
Don't blame the birds for whatever behavior they exhibit. But that's a super shot of the cardinal!
Hey is must be exciting to have some different weather for sunny Florida ... we rarely get that low even here in the mountains. Poor little bird, only ice to drink. Nice story telling.
i can't believe florida is having such cold weather!
it's freezing here, too. the high will be 7 on thursday!
great photos!!!!
Oh, dear Florida friend(s), I know you're not used to the cold and my heart truly does go out to you. These are terrific shots. I love the frozen birdbath. That image alone tells such an eloquent story. And the cardinal shot is first class.
I was going to ask what the handsome bird was, however, both BC and Jacob have answered that for me. You have such cooperative and knowledgeable commenters!
It is surely a good shot of a very handsome, although grumbling, bird. And, what bird in its right mind would eat STALE peanut butter! Pulease ...
I grew up in Pensacola when it got so much colder, probably about 50 years ago. Most people don't understand that N FL can get very cold unlike our friends in Miami. However, they are experiencing some colder than normal temps right now too. I have lived in N Fl and in Miami.
Just three years ago, Tallahassee, where I live shared the coldest temperatures in the country with Fargo, ND.
It is very cold to me no matter how you shake it down.
Love your photographs.
Carolyn
Oh, c'mon. Get out the ice skates. What, Pensacolans don't have any in the closet?
I think we are having your weather, it seems like summer here, actually it's warmer than summer, it's what summer is supposed to be....
The tourists are still hitting the beach here. No reason for sanity when you are paying $400 a night for a room.
Jacob, I guess we're just spoilt!
JE, the best part is the fall in humidity: the colder it gets the less humid. I love that part.
Myletters, which part are you in - must be north of I-10? Bundle up!
BC, I don't mind the cold - just any loss of electricity for ANY length of time. I don't have a wood burning stove anymore.
Julie, I cleaned out the refrigerator this morning. I put out the PB thinking the birds would like it but it was probably to close to the house. Maybe they'll be hungrier by tomorrow.
Carolyn, I didn't know about the Fargo connection. Sheesh! We dodged that bullet.
Bob, we do have a hockey team and a skating rink. I just don't think driving is going to be safe if there are icy roads - and no snow tires.
D, balmy? The chanterelles sound lovely, I don't think they grow here but I've heard they're delish.
B2, $400 a night? I would take that money and leave the country!
Julie and JE, I'm sorry to hear you don't have cardinals. The best part is watching the big red daddies feeding birdseed to the juveniles that are almost as big as they are. That's quite a sight.
There is a myth that Southern Cal, and Florida, don't have weather seasons.
poor little critter. You captured such a pretty little birdy :)
You get red cardinals!! Outside of peacocks and Pasadena parrots (all transplants) our birds are rather demur in color. I once saw a cardinal in Peoria. It was so exciting.
Yup - Diana is right ... it's lovely and warm here!
And I quote.."SNOWFALL POSSIBLE"...
Not the PNJ headline I would have chosen to wake up to. BRRRRRR
Love the banner and the caption and the cardinal picture is great. He does look unhappy with the conditions, but you gotta love a bird with attitude.
Wow - what a great picture of the cardinal. PA is right - no cardinals here. But once in a while we do get a bird with a bit of color...I think I have my next post planned.
When i left B''ham this morning it was 16F. When I got to Cincinnati it was 16F a little snow on the ground. Pray we get outta Dodge tomorrow!
