Nervous Nellies

I've been doing some photographic housekeeping, deleting drafts of posts I'll never publish, pitching whole files of photographs into the recycling bin, sweeping out the old to make room for the new. One of the few drafts I kept is this one, cobbled together some six or seven months ago.

Back then I spent part of a Saturday morning photographing an exemplary plant nursery called Boo For You where we bought a whole wall of bamboo plants last year. Our Bamboo Curtain doesn't look as full as the one below but it's getting there. Why, by his time next year we won't even know if the "People Who Won't Paint Their House" have even changed their minds.

Back to the the Nervous Nellies. The shoot didn't exactly go the way I planned it, there were camera setting flub-ups, and there were guinea fowl instead of the usual elegant peacocks (they were vacationing in LA - Lower Alabama). After I uploaded the photographs I was initially feeling disappointed until I started looking at the pics of the guinea fowl: lots and lots of wide-eyed, shrieking, scurrying, spotted chickens, always running, always honking. And they start young, all the chicks are Chicken Little's in embryo. Or maybe they forgot to take their meds that day? Possibly their morning mediation/yoga session was cancelled? I'm not that scary. Or am I? I see it now, to a guinea fowl I'm an unholy apparition giving them the stink eye.

Finally, one of them settled down only to give me the stink eye right back...or maybe they were just embarrassed that I had noticed that silly jabot?

Surely that GF running back up the path is the spitting image of CL. Squawk!

You really are feeling brave with this "modesty panel" of bamboo. Are you sure that the cure is not worse than the disease? In the ground: did you plant it in the ground? Or in pots?

It's in the ground, two varieties, thinner than this actually but leafier. One day I'm going to make a film of the ants that have made a life for themselves in the bamboo. I could watch them all day. At the moment we're receiving the leading edge of a tropical storm that was formerly a hurricane. I'll be interested to see what I find in the morning. We're already carpeted with pecan leaves.

You're braver than I am. I've been contemplating trying bamboo as a screen but haven't settled on any as not-too-invasive. What are the two varieties you've chosen? Hope the storm breezes by your place.

Who knew the stink eye could yield such a fun series of photographs?

I"m thinking what Julie's thinking. That bamboo is gonna take over the homestead!! You might be moving soon.

Cleaning out is good for the soul. I've cleaned out so much and STILL have zillions to go. Grrr.
Nice shots today.. It's 9 here and we're getting gentle rain. More to come by tomorrow !!!!

My bamboo and the bamboo pictured here are clumping bamboos so not to worry, no runners to ruin the terrain. There are so many kinds, some of them just extraordinary. If you want your own Bamboo Curtain, I say go for it, you won't regret it, I wish I had a forest of it. W2W, I'll have to look up the varieties I have and get back to you on that.

First of all, I love Wistful Ducky!

I can't get bamboo to grow for me indoors...

Very nice photos; love the last one in particular.

I love the girls dressed in dots even if they are a little haughty.

I've been thinking of putting in some Bamboo. It sure is gaining in popularity.

I have clumping and running. The running is, for now, contained by roofing material sunk twelve feet into the ground. I love my clumping; there's even one oldhami. Instant privacy.

I want the wooden mallard. I really really do.

I've got some back posts in the pipes too. Some of them I really like. Just seems that I have a tendency to get involved with series then the seasons wrong etc.

I like this post and I'm crazy for bamboo. I have several eye soars around my rancho that I'd like to cover with something. When your up on a hill you not only have the side neighbors you have to look at, but the neighbors whose property butts up to yours. I've considered Chinese timber bamboo.

The Guinea fowl are characters, aren't they? A bamboo fence sounds interesting. I didn't now there were many kinds but I suspect few if any grow here in Ontario.

You are quite down there this morning (my Wed am). How are you coping? Let us know when you can.

VP, you spin a good yarn yourself. Thanks for stopping by.

Bibi, I kinda like Wistful Ducky myself. Don't know anything about growing bamboo indoors, I see lots of it for sale so I know it's doable, some of it is braided for effect.

JE, they are very pretty birds, also very comical.

B2, very easy to plant and care for.

AH, I would love to have some of the larger, a la Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. But 12 feet down? Who dug that trench????

PA, if it's for privacy consider smaller, denser, clumping. In another year of two our bamboo will be a solid wall. If it's for show then, by all means, go for the gold.

EG, you would be surprised how hardy some bamboos are. The mountain bamboo is really hardy and sooooo beautiful.

Julie, we're fine, just lots and lots of pecans to gather. Thank you one and all for asking.

I like guinea fowls very much! Have seen hundreds of them in the african bush. Great bamboo shot too!
