Are You Lookin' at Me?

I caught this well-groomed pelican catching an itch on the roof of the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida. This is the real deal, unlike the pelican for the New Year's Pelican Drop. Maybe that was a good thing, this one looks a little wild-eyed.

They're incredibly flexible, so funny to watch their head and neck contortions!

Today's song is a little silly but somehow felt right, Monsieur Pelican, although, this could be a girl pelican. '~)

Wow! I've never seen a close-up of a pelican... and this one is sooo close & so crisp & so well composed. And the pose goofy pose makes is even more interesting.

I like pelicans too. Tomorrow I am posting one on Sweet Wayfaring. I notice the colouring on your pelicans is quite diffent from ours. Yours have dark head and wings where our are white.

JE, I meant to put a note in the posting that I think this may be a juvenile but I didn't get around to looking it up. This was a very young looking pelican compared to its mates.
Ilex, I think they look like pteradactyls when they're flying and gunboats when they land in the water. I think they're really amazing.

Thanks everyone for stopping by, I hope you're having a good New Year!

I don't know, KM, I think that's one for your shrink...

First, note that you have a couple of rare spam comments just above this.

Now - these birds let you come this close? How cool. I was surprised to see pelicans tooting around the ice in the Mississippi last winter but they weren't used to photographers. These are very good nature shots.

BC, there's a pond where all the injured birds live - I've delivered a few myself - and freebirds stop by to eat the fish that are put out for their brethren. They think the roof is a great vantage point as well as a preening station.
