Second post for this Sunday: International Rock Flipping Day

I found out over on 10,000 Birds that today is International Rock Flipping Day and I had the best of intentions to flip a rock but due to "extenuating" circumstances I had to settle for flipping something else: we have set aside a part of our property where we store items we hope to use one day, in this case some terracotta "found object" drainage pipes with fluted ends that will be used in an outdoor garden room. Go here to see the ever expanding Flickr set of all participants.

This morning I rolled one of them over and immediately, two small moths flew out. Now I know what they do during the day. I was very surprised not to see lots of creeping, crawling insect activity, just one lone ant.

Instead I saw winged critters, like this golden fly...

or this spider hiding under a leaf.

My children love looking under rocks and whatever they can find in the yard trying to find bugs.. Usually it mean I get to spend a lot of time fixing my landscaping.. They seem to like to torture my that way... Have a great day.. wonderful photos.

Neat series, but I've got to tell the truth. I don't miss having things to turn up and wonder what's underneath. We live in a top floor, 4th floor, apartment. I do miss having flowers in pots and maybe a tomato plant or two, but I don't think our windows are quite right for window boxes.

We've finished the leftovers from the supper--sorry!

Lovely little fly - in your photo he looks like he's exploring on Mars!

Aren't you the brave one! I'll admit to not seeing a couple of those critters, but I will take your word for it.

I will try and do 2Things on sat. this week ( IF I remember!) so I can put my church up on Sun. I might have to put two photos. I can't decide!

Very nice! International flipping was such a good idea, wasn't it? I've discovered so many great new blogs.

Each time I do a new meme I have the best of intentions, but doing a daily photo is time consuming all on its own. I felt like I was cheating when I decided on the drainage pipes but it was an adventure. And the lighting for the photographs was just perfect. Thank you everyone for dropping by.

I doubt the critters were worried about living under terracotta pipes rather than rocks... ;^)

Fairly sure your fly is one of the longlegged flies — google "Dolichopodidae" (yes, really; it's the Family name) and you'll get plenty of info. Deborah's right; he does look as if he's on mars :^)

I wonder if they like Mars bars?
